You’re following the HCG diet in New Zealand, losing weight steadily — then suddenly the scale stops moving. Welcome to the HCG diet plateau. It’s frustrating, but it’s normal, and it’s fixable.
What Is an HCG Diet Plateau?
A plateau on the HCG diet is when your weight stays the same (or within 500g) for three or more consecutive days despite following the VLCD correctly. Most people experience at least one plateau during their 26-day or 40-day programme.
The most common time for a plateau is around days 8–12 of Phase 2, and again in the final week. Your body is recalibrating — adjusting to the rapid fat loss you’ve been experiencing.
Why Does the HCG Diet Plateau Happen?
- Water retention: When fat cells are emptied, your body temporarily fills them with water before they shrink. This is the “whoosh effect” — the water releases suddenly and the scale drops overnight.
- Hormonal fluctuations: Women may experience plateaus linked to their menstrual cycle. This is normal and expected.
- Subtle dietary deviations: A small amount of cooking oil, a slightly heavier protein portion, or higher-sugar fruit can all slow things down.
- Constipation: On a very low calorie diet, bowel movements slow significantly. This alone can show as 1–2kg on the scale.
The Apple Day Technique
Dr Simeons, who developed the original HCG protocol, recommended the “apple day” to break a plateau:
- At lunch on day one of your plateau, eat one apple
- Continue eating apples whenever hungry — up to 6 apples total for the day
- Drink only enough water to quench thirst (no extra fluids)
- Resume your normal VLCD the following morning
Most people lose 500g–1.5kg overnight after an apple day. This is water weight releasing, but it’s enough to restart momentum.
Other Ways to Break an HCG Plateau
1. Audit Your Food Strictly
Re-read the approved food list and measure everything precisely. Common hidden culprits in New Zealand: whitebait (higher fat — swap for groper or terakihi), lotions with oils, herbal teas with added flavourings, and oversized tomatoes.
2. Stay Consistent With Your HC-SLIM Drops
Take your HC-SLIM drops at the same times each day — typically 3 times daily. Missed doses disrupt the protocol and are one of the most common causes of plateau. Set a phone alarm if needed.
3. Address Constipation
If you haven’t had a bowel movement in 3+ days, this is almost certainly contributing to your stall. Safe options on the HCG protocol: psyllium husk (unflavoured), herbal teas (peppermint, senna), an extra litre of water, or a light 20-minute walk.
4. Reduce Salt Intake
Excess sodium causes water retention. Cut back on seasoning mixes and stock cubes for a few days. Many supermarket herb mixes from Countdown or Pak’nSave contain hidden sugar or starch — check the labels.
How Long Does an HCG Plateau Last?
A true plateau usually breaks within 3–5 days if you stay strictly on protocol. The apple day technique often produces movement the very next morning. If your plateau extends beyond 6–7 days, consider whether you’re approaching your goal weight — some bodies naturally slow down as they near their target.
What NOT to Do During a Plateau
- Don’t reduce calories further — dropping below 500 calories can cause muscle loss
- Don’t increase exercise intensity — heavy exercise on 500 calories causes extreme fatigue
- Don’t give up — plateaus are a normal part of the process, not a sign of failure
- Don’t go off protocol — cheating will reset your progress and extend your round
The Whoosh Effect: What to Expect After a Plateau
After a plateau, many people experience a sudden drop of 1–2kg in a single day. This is your body releasing water stored in emptied fat cells. The fat loss was happening the whole time — you just couldn’t see it on the scale.
